GM Aero 2000 (Epcot), 1982
The Aero 2000 had no steering wheel or brake/gas pedals. Instead, the driver used a vertical video-game style stick mounted on the center console. The stick controlled braking and accelerating depending on how far it is pushed or pulled, and controlled steering by moving sideways. The driver didn't have to look down at the dashboard to read information either. The car's holographic heads-up
display system reflected all the car's vital information onto the windshield. Instead of using a rearview minor, General Motors put a television screen in front of the control stick, which displayed a 180-degree view of the area behind the car. There was also a navigational system and radar-assisted brakes. To allow the
car's front tires to move freely while turning at low speeds, the wheel skirts could extend outward, or be removed. The doors opened by sliding along on guided rails, to allow ease of entry and exit to the rear seats. The power windows and air conditioning/heating system could be activated by spoken commands using electronics that were able to recognize and respond to the voices for which they were programmed. There was also a unique experimental design for lap-
shoulder seat belts. The reels taking up the belts were built into the seats, and the belts needed to be slipped into a slot in the center console.
Concept Car Central
The GM Aero 2000, one of the most aerodynamic automobiles ever developed, was unveiled in 1982 at the Epcot Center World of Design display. The experimental four-seater featured sliding doors, front wheel skirts top-hinged for access to wheels and tires, and a speed-regulated rear foil to reduce fuel-costly air turbulence. Many of the design concepts are evident in GM`s electric car, EV1.
