Harley Earl freely admitted the Firebird I’s rocket-like body was inspired by the Douglas Skyray delta wing fighter jet. One on the greatest drivers of the day, Mauri Rose, piloted the Firebird I well into triple digit miles per hour at GM’s Arizona Proving Grounds. This was one concept with performance to back up its space age styling. The sound of the jet turbine engine and the bubble canopy inspired a whole generation of future astronauts of the highway.

The idea of the Firebird originated with Harley Earl who also designed its fibreglass, reinforced plastic body. The car`s Whirlfire Turbo-Power engine and the chassis were developed under the direction of GM Vice President Charles McCuen, general manager of GM Research Laboratories Division. The aircraft motif is evident in the car`s "needle" nose, delta wings swept back over the rear of the body, a vertical tail fin and a plastic bubble over the driver`s cockpit.
Mechanically, the gas turbine of the Firebird is the reverse of conventional automobiles. In the nose, ahead of the driver is a 35-gallon glass fibre-plastic fuel tank. Behind the driver is an integrated power "package" with an engine consisting of two mechanically independent parts - the gasifier section and the power section.

В 1954 увидел свет первый из серии самых безумных автомобильных проектов Америки – «реактивный» автомобиль Харли Эрла. Проект получил название Firebird I. Шеф-дизайнер GM был буквально болен идеей поставить сверхзвуковые летательные аппараты программы «X» на четыре колеса. Firebird I мало похож на средство передвижения. Зато рекламный эффект был налицо. В общем, нечто подобное крылатому Citroen DS из фильма «Фантомас» или реактивному автомобилю из «Больших гонок» существовало в Америке на самом деле, правда, в нелетающем варианте. Можно сказать, что это – «побочный продукт» деятельности Харли Эрла в рамках аэростиля. Так или иначе проект Firebird I положил начало самым необычным дизайнерским разработкам этой эпохи.
