Design research prototype

The Modulo is considered an icon of Italian design for what it expresses and evokes. Bearing witness to the creativity of our country in dozens of shows around the wrold.

It won more than 20 international prizes. An experimental one-box model, it was fitted on a chassis housing a rear mid Ferrari engine 60° V12.

"We have always aimed to combine form and function with our idea-cars. In this sense, the Modulo is unusual in its own way, closing a particular period of research, often exaggerated, into pure forms. Still today they represent the seed of innovative aesthetics, heralding formal and philosophical ideas that are now more current than ever. More than could have been imagined then, in 1970."

The Ferrari Modulo was a concept car, designed by Paolo Martin of Pininfarina and produced in 1970. It was originally shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970 in black and subsequantly repainted white and displayed at the 1970 Turin Motor Show and the 1970 Osaka World Fair. The Modulo was not intended to be a racing prototype but as a futuristic styling exercise and research vehicle, which abandoned traditional styling and construction techniques in favor of futuristic ideas. It amazed the public at the time and it earned 22 international design awards. The Ferrari Modulo was based on a 512S chassis and running gear and featured a mid mounted Ferrari quad-cam 5 litre V12 engine, producing 550bhp at 8,500 rpm and a claimed maxiumim speed of 360km/h. The Modulo had a length of 4,480 mm, a width of 2,048 mm, and a height of 935 mm.

Люди из Bertone говорят, что при виде их работ для фирм Lamborghini и Lancia Энцо Феррари в ярости требовал от «своего» ателье Pininfarina создать нечто похожее. Ответ не заставил себя ждать — именно Modulo стал иконой той эпохи и самой яркой работой дизайнера Паоло Мартина, которому в 1970 году было всего 27 лет.

В 1970 году на Женевском Автосалоне Pininfarina представила новую работу, построенную на одном из 25 шасси гоночных автомобилей Ferrari 512 S. Ультранизкий автомобиль имел закрытые корпусом колеса, что позволяло ему разворачиваться лишь по очень большому радиусу, 5,0-литровый V12 мощностью 550 лошадиных сил (!), установленный в базе и, самое главное, соскальзывающую вперед крышу, открывающую доступ к кабине.

Оригинальным цветом этого концепта был черный (!), собственно в нем он и был представлен в Женеве, однако в том же году, для Туринского Автосалона его перекрасили в белый, в коем он и остается по сей день.
