René Lalique - 'Victoire' or 'The Spirit of the Wind' - An Art Deco Icon
French luxury automaker Delage utilized the talents of artist René Lalique — the premier glassmaker and sculptor of his day — to accentuate the beauty of its cars, only after Lalique had created radiator mascots for several individual owners.

Victoire, or “Spirt of the Wind” is one of Lalique’s most prized and appreciated radiator mascots. When RM Auctions sold a lot of 30 Lalique mascots in 2012 — including a Victoire from a Delage — the collection sold for $805,000.

From René Lalique's range of mascots, "Victoire" is the most evocative of the "golden age of speed," and ranks within the top 5% of all Lalique in both rarity and desirability. Officially titled "Victoire," it was also known popularly in the period as "The Spirit of the Wind." Imagine this powerful Art Deco ornament boldly mounted on the prominent radiator cap of a magnificent automobile, illuminated from beneath through a colored light filter. "Victoire" is Lalique's largest mascot, and clearly designed for the most luxurious and stylish automobiles of the day. Examples of "Victoire" appear in several U.S. and international museums, where they are used to illustrate the elegant Art Deco era.
