Innovari Automobile Prototype from Syd Mead's book Sentinel. Originally created for the U.S. Steel book Innovations (1968). - The 'Innovari' prototype ... was intended was to be a catalogue of the many ways (a large proportion of them innovative) in which steel could be used to great advantage in a new era of design. The character of the car was personal, but it also anticipated today's practical and rakish hatchback configuration.
Innovari High Performance Coupe, concept artwork Mead created for the U.S. Steel book Innovations (1968). From Syd Mead's book Sentinel. - In the performance-oriented coupe above, Mead takes full advantage of the opportunity to display steel trim items around the glass, lights, wheel assemblies and exhaust system. The illustration is capped by a unique Mead touch - the little boy's incredible pet.

Concept car sketch made as a student in 1958, from Syd Mead's book Sentinel. - The dramatic, jet-tube after burner effect is enhanced by the precise bumper blade, but this Art Center transportation class assignment's most surprising element is the crisp, angular styling that anticipated the look of vehicles in the seventies.
As another class asignment in derivative theme design, this front end view is reminiscent of Chrysler styling. It is also the most serious of Mead's many Art Center illustrations.
