1934-1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K (W29)
Introduced as the successor to the S Series, a much raced car which debuted in 1927, the Mercedes-Benz 500K Cabriolet C is a highly sophisticated touring car with a supercharged in-line, eight-cylinder OHV engine and a fully independent suspension system.

It has an outstanding balance of design and performance. Some 300 of this model were manufactured between 1934 and 1936. In those days, it was common practice to have a renowned coachbuilder design the body of a luxury car. However, in this case, Mercedes-Benz did the coachwork at its Sindelfingen Plant.


На заре свой истории автомобильный дизайн навевал скуку. После изобретения первого автомобиля, в начале ХХ века, конструкторы никак не могли уйти от стандартных кузовов с большими крыльями и массивной хромированной решеткой радиатора. Спортивные машины того времени и вовсе напоминали сосиску на колесах, и, таким образом, глаз эстета тоже не радовали. Первые яркие звезды на небосклоне автодизайна стали зажигаться в 30-е годы. Одна из них – Mercedes Benz 500K с 5-литровым 8-цилиндровым мотором. Общий тираж – 342 экземляра, в том числе всего лишь 33 кабриолета.

To meet the individual wishes of the demanding customers, three chassis variants were available for the 500 K: two long versions with a 3,290 millimeter wheelbase, differing in terms of powertrain and bodywork layout, and a short version with 2,980 millimeters.

The long variant, the so-called normal chassis with the radiator directly above the front axle, served as the backbone for the four-seater cabriolets "B" (with four side windows) and "C" (with two side windows) and, at a later stage, also for touring cars and sedans.

The roadsters, the two-seater cabriolet "A" (with two side windows) and the ultra-modern, streamlined Motorway Courier, the first car with curved side windows and classified by the manufacturer as a sports sedan, were set up on a chassis on which radiator, engine, cockpit and all rearward modules were moved 185 millimeters back from the front axle. This configuration was a concession to the zeitgeist, a small trick that created the visual impression of a particularly long front-end and, therefore, the desired sporting appeal.
