A study for an experimental sedan featuring a 4-wheel steering system.

Mazda Design / Japan

At speed below 40 km/h (25 mph), MX-02's rear wheels steer in opposite direction to the front. This unique, four-wheel steering system gives its concept car low-speed agility and high-speed stability, says Mazda. Vehicle has a "heads-up" windshield instrument display.

"Only a concept car, and one still far from becoming a production possibility, but the MX-02 introduces many new thoughts on car design for the future. Most fascinating features are key-less entry by pushbutton digits to secret code, navigational aid with cathode ray tube ad four-wheel steering. Low drag body with CD factor of only 0.22.

Engine: Front-mounted in-line four-cylinder with twin overhead camshafts, 16 valves, and eelctronic fuel injection. Variable valve timing, and dual induction system. Bore 77 mm, stroke 69.6 mm; capacity 1296 cc. Power 100 bhp (75 kW) at 6800 rpm; torque 86 lb ft (120 Nm) at 3600 rpm.

Transmission: Front-wheel drive; automatic transmission, with finger-tip control.

Suspension: Front, independent, with automatic control of damper settings. Suspension adjustable by finger switches within reach of driver's hands on wheel.

Steering: All four wheels steer, and amount of rear steering is computer-controlled according to vehicle speed. At low speeds, rear wheels turn in opposite direction from front ones, giving turning circle of only 14 ft (4.3 m).

Brakes: Discs front, drums rear, servo-assisted, with anti-lock control.

Features: Low-drag body in conjunction with high-efficiency engine claimed to give exceptional fuel economy: but the project is still very much in the sphere of advanced research. The significant development of four-wheel steering is being researched in a Mazda 626, and would offer much greater manoeuvrability, since the car will almost move sideways when the low-speed mode, turning rear-wheels in the opposite direction from the front ones, is selected."
