#22 - The 100 most beautiful cars (The Daily Telegraph)
Errett Lobban Cord, a young entrepreneur, acquired Auburn in 1924 and Duesenberg in 1927. With these resources, the epoch-making front-wheel-drive Cord L-29 was released in 1929. However, owing to lack of sales, production was halted and the improved model, the 810, was introduced in 1935. This was then followed by the improved 812 model. The 812 had retractable headlights in addition to other advanced equipment, and in the tradition of the L-29 it employed front-wheel drive and an electrically controlled vacuum shift gearbox. Cord was committed to the realization of the dreams of engineers and designers alike.

The design of the Cord 810 and 812 series remains one of the most distinctive car designs of the 20th century. Created by legendary car designer Gordon Buehrig, the first Cord 810 created a sensation when it debuted at the 1935 New York Auto Show. The crowds around the 810 were so dense, in fact, that attendees stood on the bumpers of nearby cars to get a better look.

Nearly devoid of chrome, the new 810 was so low it required no running boards. Unusual styling elements of the day included pontoon fenders, a wraparound “coffin-nosed” grille, retractable headlights, and a concealed gas hatch. Its engine-turned dashboard included complete instrumentation, including a tachometer and built-in radio. The 288 cubic inch, V8 Lycoming engine featured a transmission which extended in front of the engine, like a Traction Avant. As a result, the front wheels were well forward of the engine. This also enabled the floor of the car to be much lower than the typical automobile.

The 810 was manufactured as a sedan (the Beverly), a four-seat convertible (the SC Phaeton) and as a two-seat convertible (the Sportsman). Total, 810/812 production was 2,972 cars. Of that, 205 of the cars were convertibles and 610 of the cars were built with factory superchargers. Less than 50 two-seat Sportsman models, such as this car, were manufactured.

With a supercharger, the Cord 810/812 cars were capable of speeds up to 110 mph. The engines created 170 bhp at 3600 rpm.

(The Single Most Beautiful American Car)
