↑ 1955 Lincoln Futura (Ghia)

The Lincoln Futura -- called the most revolutionary and advanced vehicle ever to be driven on public highways -- all but stopped Manhattan traffic when it was given its driving premier in New York City. This full rear view shows the Futura's 'shark-fin' rear fenders which house the tail lights and its circular radio aerial, combined with an 'audio approach' microphone designed to pick up and amplify the sound or horn signal from any car approaching from behind.

Against a background of the styling studios where it was conceived, the Lincoln Futura provides a hint of things to come in the automotive world. Designed by the Lincoln car stylists at Ford Motor Company's Engineering Center in Dearborn, Michigan, the Futura is a laboratory on wheels from which Lincoln-Mercury Division seeks to obtain valuable engineering data and test public reaction to styling innovations.
