By this time, it was clear that the Pacer would not sell. These prototypes were created in order to find a way to pay off Pacer costs. AMC discovered that the Pacer was not a flexible enough design to create a workable minivan, or even to retool into a smaller vehicle.

I think this prototype looks kinda cool. This could have been a viable production vehicle if it was done a few years earlier.I'm pretty positive that this would have caught on and sold well.Flexibility wasn't a big concern in the 70's.Who even thought of a minivan back then? The 70's was about style and this vehicle has it.It's a shame that AMC didn't put it into production.

The AMVan has little to do with the Pacer. The Pacer rolled out in mid 1976 and was still selling rather well in 1977 (just over 58,000). Sales didn't tank until 1978 (under 22,000). The AM Van looks like it used some Pacer components and styling cures, but I'm not sure how much.
