In 1987, to celebrate his 90th birthday and 40 years of car production, ‘Commendatore’ Enzo Ferrari unveiled in Marinello the ultimate sports car of the 80’s, and announced that it was quite simply the fastest car in the world. With a top speed of 324 kph (203 mph) and 478 bhp, the Ferrari F40 bridged the gap between a road car and a racing car.
The best presents are the ones you make yourself. Company founder and racing driver Enzo Ferrari had something rather special in mind to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ‘125’ – the first racing car to bear the name of Ferrari. The engineers from Marinello were given the task of building a Ferrari in the style of the 250LM – a car that you could drive to Le Mans, and then win there.

But the F40 is not just a homage to four decades in which Ferrari won every important prize in motor sport, and became an icon for style and elegance with road cars such as the 250 series, the Daytona, the Dino and the Testarossa. The F40 was also intended as a response to the 450 bhp Porsche 959. But in comparison to its rival from Stuttgart, with its four-wheel drive, leather seats and what was then state-of-the-art electronics, the impression the F40 leaves is nothing short of spartan.

It is a waste of time looking for carpets, central-locking, inner door trim and handles, a hi-fi or electric windows on the Ferrari F40. There are other priorities with a thoroughbred racing car. This total abstinence from comfort, combined with the use of materials such as Kevlar and Carbon, made it possible to reduce the total weight of the car to only 1100 kg.

But it is not just the low weight that gives the F40 its outstanding performance. Under the Plexiglas window in the rear hood there hides racing technology, pure and simple. The power unit, derived from the 288GTO, had been enlarged and provided with a new crankshaft and higher pressure from the turbo. The turbo V8 mid-engine produces a beefy 478 bhp at 7000 rpm, achieves maximum torque of 577 Nm at 4000 rpm, and with its 5-speed gearbox and rear-wheel drive, pushes the car from 0 to 100 kph (0 to 62.5 mph) in 4.6 seconds. These are the qualities that were to bring the F40 plenty of Grand Prix victories.

To prevent the lightweight car from lifting off at speeds around 320 kph (200 mph), most of the design work on the body at Pininfarina took place in the wind tunnel. Thanks to a turned-down front end and the gigantic rear spoiler, road adhesion is practically perfect. Air inlets at the front, in the side panels and at the rear provide the cooling airflow required for both the engine compartment and the powerful disc brakes.

However, just how close it is to motor racing only really becomes clear from the driver’s perspective. The bucket seats lined with red velour, the pull-cables to open the doors, the lack of rear visibility and the ear-splitting roar of the engine make driving the F40 an experience on the limit.

The sales figures prove that there were people prepared to buy the F40, despite its uncompromising nature. The original plan was to produce 400 cars but the demand was so great that in the end 1311 cars were built up to 1992.

The F40 is the last Ferrari that Enzo Ferrari personally unveiled before his death in 1988, and probably the last great mid-engined sports car of the pre-electronic era.

От своего генетического предка, модели 308, F40 унаследовала лишь профиль кабины и черную акцентирующую полоску вдоль всего периметра кузова. В остальном дерзкий «непричесанный» кузов был абсолютно новым, как новыми были и материалы. Низкий агрессивный передок, вызывающе эклектичный набор воздухозаборников, канализирующих воздух в моторный отсек, прикрытый панорамным стеклом, а над ним огромное, во всю ширину кузова, антикрыло, как свидетельство чудовищной мощи – совсем в духе 80-х.


21 июля 1987 года, итальянская Ferrari родила модель F40, появление которой пришлось как раз на 40-летие компании. Роды принимались на заводе в Маранелло. Энцо Феррари, которому тогда было уже 89 лет, сообщил присутствовавшим на торжественной церемонии гостям: "Год назад я сказал своим инженерам сделать самый лучший в мире автомобиль. Похоже, у них получилось".

Ferrari F40 на тот момент была самой быстрой машиной из всех, ездивших по обычным дорогам, а не гоночным трекам. Ее главным соперником был Porsche 959. У нее даже не было электроники, помогавшей тормозить, а с места машина при этом улетала до сотни за 3,5 секунды. Кстати, F40 стала первой серийной машиной, преодолевшей скоростной барьер в 320 км/ч.
