BMW Z9 Cabrio Concept, 2000
At the North American International Auto Show held earlier this year, BMW debuted one of their newest concepts. Based from the design of last year’s Z9 Grand Turismo, BMW introduced the Z9 Convertible. Its exterior and interior features take a look into the future of BMW design philosophy.

The profile of this open-air 2+2 poses class and simplicity with its long engine compartment and short deck proportions. From front to rear its discrete lines and surfaces create a feeling of excitement while giving this unique convertible the beauty and sophistication known in BMW design. The body is constructed of laminated carbon fiber that provides an increase in strength without adding weight. The exterior design is accented by larger 20 inch front and 21 inch rear wheels and tires. The Z9 Convertible is powered by a 4.4 liter V8 engine developing a maximum output of 286 bhp and a maximum torque of 325 lb-ft.

The interior of the Z9 Convertible is quite amazing. The heart of its remarkable interior design lies within the iDrive system. The iDrive system is an ergonomically designed concept that allows the numerous interior controls to be managed in an easier fashion and with minimal distraction to the driver. The management of these functions are arranged into three groups based on the type of driving that is being done. The first group contains the most basic functions most significant to the driver and their safety. These are located in the area around the steering wheel allowing for quick, easy access. The basic functions that are frequently used and also require rapid access like the lights and temperature settings are located on a second level and are controlled by customary switches. The remaining and the majority of the functions fall in the realm convenience, comfort, communications or driver assistance. These functions all reside in the Control Center, a small color monitor located between the driver and the passenger, but in the direct view of the driver. This allows for quick and easy usage without compromisingthe driver’s attention to the road. The functions encompassed within the Control Center are enabled using a rotary-push knob on the on the center console.

The BMW Z9 Convertible truly does fulfill the luxury desires of the any driver.
