1902 Oldsmobile Runabout (aka the Curved Dash Olds) – one of America’s most important and historic early automotive models.

The Curved Dash Oldsmobile is credited as the first high-volume mass-produced automobile. It was introduced by the Oldsmobile company in 1901 and produced through 1907. It is believed that 425 examples were produced the first year, 2,500 in 1902. A total of 19,000 units were built during the six years. During its run, it was the top selling car in America.

With the prominent curved dash, tiller type steering, and the side-spring chassis, this car was very identifiable when compared to other cars of the era. The leather top and dos-a-dos seating were factory supplied accessories that could be purchased with the car or added later.

A flat-mounted water-cooled single-cylinder engine, is situated at the center of the car, producing 4 hp, and relies on a brass gravity-feed carburetor. The transmission is a semi-automatic design with two forward speeds and one reverse. The car weighs 850 lbs.

In 1905, a Curved Dash Olds was the first car to drive across the United States.

Just wanted to say that the Curved Dash Oldsmobile was not the first car to travel across the US as this article states. This was accomplished in 1903 by Horatio Nelson Jackson in a used Winton automobile. In fact, there are several documented cases of people traveling across the country in a car before 1905.

I found an old 1901 Oldsmobile in the Forest on a farm after the 2012 October Fies in Manton, California. It was not burnt but in pretty poor condition. I am in the process of rebuilding it and plan to make a trip across the western United States in it starting in June. I know about the June 3o, - August 5, 1985 booklet, But I want to make this trip more Original. I do not want to travel all the latest of highways. I want to travel on as many of the Oldest roads straight across from Redding, Ca. to Branson, Missouri. Is there anyone out there who can help me in the planning stage. I am a 73 year old who wants one more adventure. I have numerous photoo on www.mtshastaophanclassicsgroup.shutterfly.com,

I wrote the above article two years ago, and thought I would up date what has been going on with my life and 1901 Oldsmobile found in the Manton, California Forest Fire after nearly 60 years being out of site and out of mind.
Well I completely restored the car and had the Original motor running in just two days. A man 95 years old by the name of Ed. Ewing who is still working rebuilding Kaiser Frazer and henry J. as well as Even Rude Boat Motors. Know world wide for his work. I drove the car over 500 miles before blowing the motor. I replaced it with a new V-Twin Vanguard Briggs and Stratton 16 H. P. adding a second cylinder. Plus making it a whole lot easier and reasonable to have worked on. I drive it on the average of 100 + miles everyday and it is known world wide for it's representation for our American Fallen Warrior Memorial Foundation. aka www.GoldStarWall.org. It has taken a trip from California toe Missouri and has traveled all over Northern California. My next tour is I hope from Redding, Ca. to the Coast in Arcadia, Ca. and North up the Coast of Oregon. I would love to invite any hardy people who is Old enough to get away from home a few weeks to come and join me. I have R. V. Parks all along the way who said they would help us on our Camp sites.
before I leave, I will have a list of business's who will help us along the way. All money's collected will be donated direct to the Charities I will not be collecting any cash.

I am looking for some Fabricators who would like getting into turning out 1903 Oldsmobile Cars. Of all the many, many cars I have owned. and I have owned about every type possible for a 75 year old man. The 1901 Oldsmobile has been the most exciting experience I have enjoyed. I have people asking me all the time what I would charge to build a car similar. I am looking into building my own version of a Horseless carriage with Disc Brakes, Motorcycle spoke wheels, with a four and a five speed Transmission powered by a small Motorcycle engine. I am looking into the feasibility of an all aluminum Body and Frame. I have found it is just as cheap as building a wood bodoed one.
