A specially designed trailer with large plexiglass side panels was used to transport the vehicle; a standard Ford COE tractor pulled the trailer and its unique cargo.

1955 Mercury XM-8100 Turnpike Cruiser Experimental Car
This concept car embraced the elegance of the era while adding some very unique styling and features.

The 1955 XM-8100 was a luxury concept, presented with a femine touch.

Several design elements re-appeared in the 1957 Mercury.

One of Mercury’s most memorable dream cars of all time is the audacious XM Turnpike Cruiser from 1956. Bold styling featured 12-inch wide V-shaped taillights and matching pealescent concave-sculpted rear fenders. The XM Turnpike Cruiser’s large, flat roof seemed to float above the two-tone interior. Twin transparent roof panels flipped-up when doors were opened.

1956 Mercury XM Turnpike Cruiser Concept was designed with fast, long driving in mind. It was inspired of the Interstate Highway System. A lot of the design elements was later seen on the regular production model 1957 Turnpike Cruiser.

This is so interesting! I just came across papers today in my Dad's old briefcase of this car and the trailer it was carried in. The trailer was called the Van-O-Rama and was designed by my father, Don Meade. I have the drawings, the photos, his contract with Ford Mercury and a newspaper clipping with his name in it about the invention. Nice to see so much info and photos on line about it!

I've read on another web-site, without a comment section, that the car ended up in a California Junkyard. False. The car is alive and well, being restored in Ventura County California, inside my uncle's workshop.

I'm glad I found this site, and an update as of today about this car! I can't wait to see the finished results. It was frustrating to run into dead ends, and when a couple of pics did show of its prior to restoration state, it was heartbreaking. But, better days ahead!

I owned the XM Turnpike Cruiser, along with my dad Ray Sabo, from 1979-82. We purchased it in Lima Ohio, and brought it back to my house in Royal Oak, Michigan. It needed a complete restoration, which proved beyond our means. We sold it to a man in California, and believe he still owns the car, still needing to be restored. Now I read here that the car is in a shop in Ventura County being restored. That's awesome! I would like more info and pics about the progress if at all possible. Though it's been over 30 years since I sold her, our family has a strong affection, and it would elate all of us to see her in 1956 form again! Thanks to all, Al Sabo

I would love to learn more about the car and any restoration that may be underway, as well as the "van o Rama" . . . I'd love to see the whole rig on the road again.

I purchased the car in the summer of 2018 from Ray Cosh in Ojai CA.
Since December of 18 I've been restoring the car and sometime this week it will be painted. And then re-assembly will begin. It's currently in primer.
The restoration has been chronicled on my website www.tommaruskacars.us
Carol Meade if you're listening please contact me. Contact info is on my website.
